The Torchlight Procession
(La Fiaccolata)

The Torchlight Procession known as “La Fiaccolata” is a wonderful new custom that takes place during the Novena of Our Lady of Consolation in Brognaturo.  It usually takes place the Wednesday night of the week leading up to the Feast of Our Lady of Consolation.

The Procession begins at a small chapel on Corso Roma known as La Cona. (La Cona was built in the sixties, and is situated in the area called “Sandello” and contains the statue of the Sacred Heart) and ends in the town square also known as “La Piazza.”  It usually takes place at dusk.

The procession is lead by The Statue of Our day of Consolation loaded onto a small pickup truck and adorned with flowers.  Our Lady is followed by the priest and then all members participating in this event which include the members of the community, visiting immigrants and pilgrims who have made their way to Brognaturo. The Priest with the aid of a loud speaker leads everyone in prayer, consisting of the Rosary, and other prayers and songs relating to Our Lady of Consolation.  Everyone’s favourite songs are sung with love and devotion.  My favourite song during the Novena has always been “12 Sono le Stelle” because no matter where I am when the song is being sung in Brognaturo or Toronto it takes me back to our first visit back in 1978 when I saw the incoronation of Our Lady at the viewing of the miracles.  I remember taking part in this event and reading during the outdoor Mass for the first time in 2004 and I was over come with emotion. It is a great experience and everyone should experience at least once.

Throughout the procession, everyone young and old holds a candle during the procession.  The homes that line the street of Corso Roma from have candles burning in front of them as well. As the he procession makes its way into the “Piazza” the town square is full of candles that lead to an Altar on the stage that is adorned for the outdoor mass that follows the procession in the Piazza”. In addition to the mass there is also a benediction.

La Fiaccolata e` una  tradizione recente che ha luogo durante la Novena della Madonna della Consolazione a Brognaturo e di solito avviene il mercoledi della settimana della Madonna.
La processione  inizia da una piccola cappella, conosciuta come "La Cona" (costruita negli anni sessanta e contenente la statua del Sacro Cuore. Situata in corso Roma conosciuto anche come localita` "Sandello"),  e si conclude nella piazza. Di solito la processione ha luogo durante la serata.
La processione e` preceduta dalla statua della Madonna della Consolazione trasportata per l`occasione da un piccolo furgone adornato di fiori.
La Madonna e` seguita dall`Arciprete e da tutti gli altri partecipanti sia locali che forestieri , pellegrini ed emigranti venuti a Brognaturo per l`occasione. L`Arciprete, con l`aiuto di un altoparlante, incita i partecipi alla preghiera che consiste il "Rosario"  seguito da altre preghiere e canti relativi alla Madonna. I canti vengono eseguiti con amore e devozione. Il mio canto preferito e` stato sempre "12 sono le Stelle" perche` ovunque io sia, Toronto o Brognaturo, mi riporta a quando ritornata per la prima volta a Brognaturo nel 1978 ho assististo all`Incoronazione ed alle Vedute. Mi ricordo di aver partecipato ad una delle "Letture" durante la Messa celebrata fuori nel 2004 ed essere stata presa da una grande emozione. E` stata una gran bella esperienza che tutti dovrebbero avere almeno una volta nella vita.
Durante la processione tutti, giovani ed anziani, portano in mano una candela accesa. Anche le case di Corso Roma sono adornate  con delle candele accese . Come la processione arriva in piazza, la piazza e` adornata di candele accese che formano una via fino ad un altare sul palco adornato per l`occasione e dove viene celebrata la Messa. Dopo la Messa si finisce con la Benedizione.
