The Rites of the Novena Bon Fires

Ogni anno, oramai da tempi immemorabili, il giovedi che precede la settimana della prima domenica di settembre e` giorno di festa a Brognaturo. Il rito con il passare degli anni si e` un po` trasformato, ma l`entusiasmo della popolazione e` sempre lo stesso. In tempi non molto lontani, la gente andava per le campagne a raccogliere rami secchi, rifiuti rimasti nei campi dopo la raccolta dei lupini (li spinuozzula) e quanto di piu` combustibile si poteva trovare per poi portarlo ed accumularlo dove oggi sorge l`edificio scolastico, allora un campo di pallone, e davanti al convento dei Domenicani. La sera del giovedi dopo la messa ed i fuochi d`artificio che segnalavano l`inizio della novena della Madonna della Consolazione, si accendevano i fuochi che venivano alimentati da tutti con grande entusiasmo fino a notte  inoltrata. Oggi la gente si riunisce in piccoli gruppi ed accendono il fuocherello,  pressoche` dappertutto ed oltre che per devozione,  lo si usa anche per arrostire salsicce, carne, etc. Imbandiscono le tavole fuori per le vie del paese con cibi caserecci e buon vino e passano la serata in allegria mangiando, suonando, cantando e ballando fino alle ore piccole.

The Rites of the Novena Bon Fires

 Every year now from time immemorial, the Thursday that proceeds the week of first Sunday of September is a day of Feast in Brognaturo.  It marks the beginning of the Novena (nine day prior to the Feast of Our Lady of Consolation).
 With the passing of years the customs have changed and transformed, however, the enthusiasm of the population always remains the same.  Some years not to distant in the past, people went the forested areas surrounding Brognaturo to collect dry branches,  agricultural waste in farms after the harvest of lupine, and what ever else could be found and other combustible items that could be found.  They would be taken and accumulated where the school stands today, which used to be a soccer field back then, in addition in front of the Dominican Convent.
On this special Thursday night after the celebration of Holy Mass and fireworks which symbolized the beginning of The Novena of Our Lady of Consolation the Bon Fires would be lit.  The Bon Fires would be nourished by everyone with great enthusiasm until the early hours of the morning.
Today the people gather in small groups and light small bon fires, nearly everywhere in the town and in addition to devotion, and they are also used to roast sausages and various types of meats etc.  Tables are prepared outside for the feast throughout the streets of the town with homemade foods and good vine and the evening is celebrated with joy and happiness eating, playing instruments, singing and dancing until the early hours of the morning.
