Angel Dominguez, nipote di Raffaele Caterina ci narra la storia dei suoi nonni dopo che hanno lasciato Brognaturo e si sono stability negli USA .

Raffaele Perino nasce a Brognaturo nel 1879 dai genitori Francesco Nicola e Mangiardi Caterina. Raffaele e` il sesto di sette figli assieme a: Domenico, Maria Teresa, Antonio, Rosa, Chiara e Maria Santa Teresa. Nel 1908 sposa Carchidi Caterina figlia di Giuseppe e Salerno Raffaela e la loro vista coniugale e` resa ancora piu` felice nel 1909 con l`arrivo del primo figlio Domenico Antonio nato a Brognaturo. Nel 1910 circa, come tanti del nostro amato paese, Raffaele e sua moglie Caterina si armano di coraggio e decidono di affrontare la grande traversata atlantica per andare a costruirsi una nuova vita negli USA, dove tanti paesani si erano oramai trasferiti e li potevano procurarsi, anche se con molti sacrifici, le necessita` della vita. Negli USA , Raffaele trova lavoro sulla ferrovia, allora in piena fase di sviluppo mentre la moglie Caterina a casa accudisce I bambini che ormai incominciano ad arrivare sempre piu` numerosi. In fatti, Raffaele e Caterina  avranno 19 figli tra cui 4 muoiono nell`infanzia e 15 sopravvivono. I figli sopravvissuti sono tutti nati nell` Illinois e sono i seguenti :

Quasi tutti i figli maschi diventano contadini e lavorano la terra che nel frattempo Raffaele e Caterina, memori della vita nostalgica di Brognaturo, avevano comprato a Deer Grove, nell`Illinois, a circa 2 ore e ½ di macchina a sudovest da Chicago. Da notare che nonostante la famiglia sia numerosa e con tante bocche da sfamare, marito e moglie riescono ugualmente a mandare di tanto in tanto dei soldi a Brognaturo per aiutare i parenti rimasti la`. Secondo la testimonianza di Giorgio Girardi ( uno dei numerosi nipoti di Raffaele e Caterina), che ha visitato Brognaturo in piu` di un`occasione, sembra sia stato costruito dai parenti rimasti al paese,  un posticino considerato sacro e dedicato a Caterina Carchidi.

Alla morte dei genitori i figli maschi ereditano la loro porzione di terra ed I loro figli ancora oggi continuano a coltivarla. La casa dove vivevano Raffaele e Caterina esiste ancora e Dino, un’altro dei loro numerosi nipoti (circa 44) vive e coltiva la terra come ai vecchi tempi.

Da quello che si sa, Raffaele e Caterina avevano anche altri parenti altrettanto emigrati da Brognaturo ed abitavano non molto lontano da dove vivevano loro. Raffaele aveva la sorella Chiara Perino (Diventata poi Chiara Mangiardi per via delle usanze negli USA di prendere il cognome del marito) che viveva a Sheffield nell`Illinois, dove gli sono nate due figlie Caterina ed Elisabetta), mentre Caterina aveva una sorella che si era stabilita nel Rhode Island  e di tanto in tanto prendeva il treno ed andava a visitarla alla fattoria .

Anna Bonetti, nipote di Domenica (nel frattempo si era sposata con un Zangari), la sorella di Caterina ci racconta:

Mia nonna si era stabilita nel Rhode Island e si reco` spesse volte non solo col treno ma anche in aereo a visitare la sorella Caterina alla fattoria. Domenica ha avuto 5 figli: Mario (deceduto nel 2004), Giuseppe (deceduto nel 1940), Nicola( deceduto nel 2003), Rosa ( 82enne) e mia madre Christina (80enne). Mia madre e zia Rosa rimangono migliore amiche e vanno tutti I giorni in chiesa assieme.  Mia madre mi racconta storie della sua famiglia e anche di mia nonna (mamma di Caterina) che e` vissuta fino all`eta` di 99 anni.  

Qualcosa da notare e` che Angela, la piu` piccola dei 15 figli sopravvissuti ( seduta sulle ginocchia della mamma ) ci ha lasciati per prima all`eta` di 48 anni afflitta da una grave malattia. Lei e la sua famiglia vivevano in Peoria , nell` Illinois , vicino a Chicago . Angela era la madrina di Angela Dominguez (da sinistra a destra, sua mamma e` lultima bambina in prima fila) che nel raccontarci la storia ci sottolinea come questa fosse una grande signora dal cuore generoso. Uno dei suoi 5 figli e cugino di Angela Dominguez e`Joe Girardi che dopo una carriera di professionista nel mondo dello sport e precisamente nel mondo del baseball e` attualmente il manager della squadra di baseball dei New York Yankees.

Una quindicina di anni fa`, considerando il numero dei parenti ed I loro discendenti, e stata stabilita una riunione annuale della famiglia Perino. La riunione avviene nella chiesa cattolica di Tampico , nell` Illinois , vicino Deer Grove, la prima settimana di Agosto.  E` qui, in questo luogo che Raffaele Perino e Caterina Carchidi hanno trovato il loro riposo eterno. Dei loro 19 figli, 6 sono ancora viventi: Raffaele, Concetta, Addolorata, Michele, Giovanni ed Elisabetta.

Angel Dominguez, granddaughter of Raffaele and Catherine recounts the story of her grandparents after they left Brognaturo and went to USA .

Raffaele Perino was born in Brognaturo in 1879 from parents Frank Nicholas and Catherine Mangiardi. Raffaele was the sixth of seven children with Domenic (born in 1867), Marie Teresa (born in 1869), Anthony (born in 1873), Rose (no record), Chiara (born in 1885. N.T.D. my great grandmother) and Marie Santa Theresa (born in 1882).
In 1908 he married Catherine Carchidi, daughter of Joseph and Salerno Raffaela. The marriage is blessed with the arrival of their first child, Domenic Anthony, born in Brognaturo in 1909. Around 1910, like many of our beloved countrymen, Raphael and his wife Catherine decide, armed with lots of courage, to cross the Atlantic Ocean and go to build a new life for themselves and their children in the USA where many emigrants from the same village were settling so they could work and provide for themselves and their families, albeit with many sacrifices, the necessities of life. In the U.S. Raffaele finds work on the railroad at that time in full swing. His wife Catherine stayed at home to look after their children who now are beginning to get ever more numerous. In fact, Raphael and Catherine in the years to come have 19 children. Four of them either died at birth or in infancy and fifteen survived. The surviving children were all born in Illinois , USA , and are as follows:

Most of the boys (Frank, Joe, Ed,  Ralph and John) become farmers and worked the land that Raffaele and Catherine, nostalgic of the times gone by in Brognaturo, had acquired in Deer Grove, Illinois, about 2 ½ hours drive southwest of Chicago. Although the family is large and with so many mouths to feed, husband and wife occasionally are still able to send money to help their relatives back home in Brognaturo. According to George Girardi (one of several grandchildren of Raffaele and Catherine), who visited Brognaturo a few times, it seems the relatives in Brognaturo have built a small shrine in Catherine’s memory.
Catherine follows her husband to their eternal home in 1973.

After their parents passed away, the boys who had previously become farmers took a portion of the land and it is still farmed by them or their children. The house where Raffaele and Catherine lived is still there and Dino Perino, another of their many grandchildren (about 44 altogether) live and farms there together wit his two boys just like the old days.

From what it is known, Raphael and Catherine had other relatives who had also emigrated from Brognaturo and settled not far from where they lived. Raffaele’s had his sister Chiara Perino (later to become Chiara Mangiardi as it was her husband’s last name) who lived in Sheffield , Illinois , where two of her daughters (Catherine and Elisabeth) were born. Catherine had a sister who had settled in Rhode Island and from time to time she use to go and visit the Perinos at their farm.

Ann Bonetti, granddaughter of Catherine’s sister Domenica who had married a Zangari tells us about her grandmother:

My grandmother settled in Rhode Island and, while she did take the train to visit the farm (N.D.T.the Perino farm), she flew often from Rhode Island to visit her sister Catherine.
Domenica had 5 children:
Mario ( who died in 2004), Joe (who died in 1940), Nicholas (who died in 2003), Rose ( who is 82) and my mother Christina (who is 80). My mother and auntie Rose remain best friend and attend church daily together.  My mother tells me stories about the family, including my grandmother (Catherine’s mother ) who lived to be 99.

An interesting note. Angie, the youngest of the 15 surviving Perino children (she is the one sitting in the lap of her mother in the family picture) passed away first. She had cancer and died in 1984 at the age of 48. She and her family lived in Peoria , Illinois , near Chicago . One of her five children is Joe Girardi who after a career as a professional baseball player he is currently the manager of the baseball team of the New York Yankees. Angie was also the godmother of Angel Dominguez and she points out what a great lady her godmother was.

Angel Dominguez is the granddaughter of Raffaele and Catherine and she is telling us the story of her grand parents. Angel Dominguez mom Connie is the last girl to the right in the front row of the family picture. With these many uncles and aunts the Perino have started a family reunion that is held every first week of August at the Catholic Church in Tampico , Illinois (near Dear Grove. That is when most of the relatives see each other.  It is there that Raffaele Perino and Catherine Carchidi together with many of their children and other relatives are resting.

Of the 19 children of Raffaele Perino and Catherine Carchidi there are six still alive and they are: Raphael, Connie, Dolly, Michael, John and Liz.
