Feast of Our Lady of Consolation

Before
I begin telling you about the 2008 Feast of Our Lady of
Consolation I believe that I must provide you with a brief history
of how the Feast began it’s origins in Toronto.
In
1989 my parents organized the celebration of a Holy Mass in honour
of Our Lady of Consolation for a grace and blessing received.
My parents started off by inviting all our “paesan” and
everyone attended. The mass was held on the day of the Feast and
it took place at our parish church of Saint Jane Francis in north
Toronto, which was then the City of North York.
After the mass, they hosted refreshments in the parish
hall.
It
was a wonderful day, because Brognaturese immigrants and their
families had the opportunity to congregate for the first time
since they immigrated to Toronto to honour and celebrate Our Lady
of Consolation. On
the same day, September 3, 1989 with great enthusiasm, excitement
and liveliness they all began to discuss and organize for future
years. Club Brognaturese of Toronto was established and in 1990 the
first organized Feast was held at St. Patrick’s Park. As a
result, a Feast is planned every year for individuals who can not
return to Brognaturo to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of
Consolation as they would love to do.
It allows the Brognaturese immigrants not only to celebrate
a wonderful event that they were accustomed to celebrate prior to
immigrating to Toronto, however, it allows them to feel a
connection to their home town of Brognaturo and to teach their
children and grandchildren of this wonderful little town, and the
love that they carry both for Brognaturo and Our Lady of
Consolation.
Initially
the Feast was celebrated with just an enlarged photo of Our Lady
of Consolation, as time passed and as funds were raised the Club
commissioned someone to build a statue of Our Lady of Consolation.
1994 marked the first year that the feast of Our Lady of
Consolation was celebrated with a replica statue of “Our
Lady”. Over the
years the celebration has grown.
Immigrants from Brognaturo who live in all parts of Ontario
have made their way to Toronto for this celebration.
On occasion we have been blessed to have a visitor from
Brognaturo. Devoted individuals from Spadola, Simbario, Serra San Bruno
and other neighbouring villages in this area of Calabria attend
with great enthusiasm, devotion and love. Of course everyone
invites friends who consist of people of various parts of Italy as
well as non Italians.
This year, on Thursday August 28, 2008 the members of Club
Brognaturese of Toronto began the Novena of Our Lady of
Consolation as they did in their home town of Brognaturo many,
many years ago exactly nine day prior to the Feast of Our Lady of
Consolation. The
Novena did not begin with the same greatness and elaborate
festivities as is now the custom in Brognaturo; however it began
with the same love, devotion, dedication and attachment to Our
Lady of Consolation that they brought with them many, many years
ago when they left their little town of Brognaturo, and with the
same love, devotion, dedication and attachment that they have
instilled in their children and grandchildren.
Each
night throughout the Novena Brognaturese immigrants together with
friends from Spadola, Simbario and Serra San Bruno gathered at Our
Lady of Mount Carmel Daycare in Maple, Ontario where “Our
Madonna” is stationed to recite the Rosary and to dedicate
prayers and songs in her honour.
In addition, to feel the love and devotion and the spirit
of the Feast that they once felt when the celebrated the Novena in
Brognaturo. Our Lady of Consolation was adorned with flowers and
candles were lit. On
the Friday night prior to the Feast there is always a great turn
out because people tell friends, who tell friend that the viewing
of the great Miracles will take place.
A video tape of all the miracles bestowed by Our Lady of
Consolation is played and everyone is elated and overjoyed to be
able to participate in an event that had great signification in
their life prior to immigrating to Canada.
This
year, Sunday September 7, 2008 the day of the Feast was marked
with great down pour of rain and cold weather. For the very first
time in the history of this event taking place in Toronto, we were
not able to proceed with the procession of Our Lady of
Consolation, the “Pignata” Games, the children’s races, face
painting, cotton candy nor the men’s card games.
The children’s Bouncing Castle could not be erected and
the Marching Band could not play its music as faithful marched in
procession behind “Our Lady of Consolation” With some minor
modifications the Feast went on.
The mass was not celebrated in the outdoor chapel as is
customary; the statue of Our Lady of Consolation was moved is to
an enclosed area that had multi functions as it acted a place of
worship, a location to have lunch and a location to listen to
music and have fun with family and friends.
The
Feast of Our Lady of Consolation may have not had the big turn out
that it normally has, but what was constant was the love that the
people of Brognaturo and neighbouring towns of Spadola, Simbario
and Serra San Bruno have Our Lady of Consolation.
Most families still attended despite the undesirable
weather condition. Many
came for the mass and then left. Others
came when the weather cleared up in the late afternoon.
Many poems and prayers written by the immigrants were also
read.
This
year, as in past years people came from outside the Greater
Toronto Area. Brognaturese
and their families came from Sue Saint Marie, Hamilton, London and
Kitchener.
After
the Mass, the priest blessed the bread and the “mustaccioli vuti”
that the ladies had baked. As
is customary the bread and blessed “mustaccioli vuti” were
distributed. In the afternoon all the women brought out the
cookies that they had baked to share in the “Friendship Table”
and the Club offered the coffee.
As usual, there was live entertainment and a raffle with
many wonderful prizes.
For dinner this year the Club offered “porchetta pannini”
and corn on the cob” Despite the fact that the day began with a
down pour of rain and cold weather, it turned out to be a great
day amongst family and friends.
This
year I can not offer you wonderful pictures of all the activities
that take place, but what I can offer are pictures of many of your
friends and children of Brognaturo and Our Lady of Consolation,
who have a great love for both.

La Festa della Madonna della Consolazione

Prima di incominciare
a parlare della festa della Madonna, vorrei spiegare come e`
nata
l`idea a Toronto.
Nel 1989 i miei
genitori hanno prenotato una Santa Messa in onore della Madonna
della Consolazione per ringraziarla di una grazia ricevuta. I miei
genitori hanno voluto invitare I nostri paesani e tutti sono
venuti. Il giorno
della ricorrenza
della Festa, la Messa ha avuto luogo nella Parrocchia di Santa
Giovanna Francesca
in North York a nord di Toronto. Dopo la Messa si e`
avuto un rinfresco nella sala parrocchiale e tutti erano invitati.
E`
stata una giornata meravigliosa perche` tutti gli emigrati
Brognaturesi hanno avuto l`occasione di riunirsi per onorare e
celebrare la Madonna della Consolazione per la prima volta sin da
quando sono partiti per Toronto. Lo stesso giorno, 3 settembre
1989, con grande slancio ed entusiasmo cominciarono a discutere e
ad organizzare per gli anni futuri. Il club dei Brognaturesi era
nato e nel 1990 la prima festa organizzata si e` tenuta al parco di
San Patrizio. Sin da
allora, la festa
si fa` tutti gli anni per
quelli che non possono andare a Brognaturo
a celebrare la Festa della Madonna della Consolazione come
veramente avrebbero voluto. Questo evento da` agli
emigrati Brognaturesi non solo la possibilita` di celebrare un lieto evento che
da sempre erano abituati prima che
emigrassero, ma da` anche loro la
possibilita di sentire quell`attaccamento
e amore
che nutrono
verso quel meraviglioso piccolo paese e verso La Madonna
della Consolazione e di trasmetterlo ai loro figli e nipoti.
Dapprima
la festa veniva celebrata con un`immagine della Consolazione
ricavata da una foto ingrandita. Col passare del tempo e dopo
avere accumulato un po` di fondi, il club commissiono` perche`
venisse costruita una statua. Il 1994 e` stato il primo anno in
cui la festa e` stata celebrata con una replica della statua
della
Madonna. Con il passare degli anni, la festa si e` ingrandita. Gli
emigrati brognaturesi sparsi nell`Ontario, vengono a Toronto per
la festa. In alcune occasioni siamo stati fortunati
anche ad avere
qualche ospite proprio di Brognaturo. Emigrati di Spadola,
Simbario, Serra s. Bruno e tutti i paesi vicini partecipano con
grande entusiamo, devozione ed amore. Inoltre tutti portano amici
e parenti provenienti da altre parti dell`Italia e anche amici non
Italiani.
Quest`anno,
giovedi 28 agosto 2008, i membri del club Brognaturese di Toronto
cominciarono la Novena come ai vecchi tempi, esattamente nove
giorni prima della festa. La novena non e` certo con tutte le
elaborate funzioni ed usanze con cui la gente festeggia in
Brognaturo, pero` si fa` con lo stesso amore, attaccamento
e devozione di quando sono partiti tanti anni fa` e con lo
stesso amore e devozione hanno
trasmesso questa usanza ai loro
figli e nipoti.
Ogni
sera durante la Novena, gli emigrati Brognaturesi, insieme con
quelli di Spadola, Simbario e dei paesi vicini, si radunano nella Scuola
Infantile della Madonna del Carmelo nella localita` di Maple , dove
risiede la nostra Madonna, recitano il Rosario e cantano in suo
onore. Inoltre, per far si che ci si senta
un po` come i tempi che furono, la Madonna viene adornata
con i fiori e si accendono dei ceri. Al venerdi della Festa c`e`
sempre un grande raduno di folla.
Gli amici portano altri
amici
perche` ci sono le vedute dei miracoli. Infatti
si fa` vedere una video cassetta con i
miracoli della Madonna
(le vedute) e tutti sono felici e
contenti di partecipare ad un evento che
gli dava un senso di una
grande
importanza
prima che immigrassero in Canada.
Quest`anno,
domenica 7 settembre 2008, per
la prima volta nella storia di questa celebrazione a Toronto, e` stata una giornata fredda e piovosa.
Infatti non c`e` stata la solita Processione, i giochi delle
pignate, oppure le facce dipinte dei bambini o i giochi delle
carte. Non c`e` stato il castello
danzante dei bambini e la banda non ha potuto suonare e marciare
dietro la Madonna.
Con
qualche modifica la festa e` proceduta ugualmente. La statua e`
stata portata dentro una sala dove si e` celebrata la messa. Nella
stessa sala si e` fatto il banchetto, si e` ascoltata musica e ci
si e`
divertiti a parlare con gli amici e parenti.
La
festa non ha avuto lo stesso affollamento degli anni passati, ma i
presenti, inclusi quelli dei paesi vicini a Brognaturo,
sono venuti nonostante la misera temperatura nutrendo lo stesso amore che hanno sempre nutrito per la nostra
Madonna. Alcuni, sono andati via subito dopo la messa, altri sono
arrivati nel tardo pomeriggio quando la temperatura era un po` piu`
clemente. Inoltre sono state lette
tante preghiere e poesie per
l`occasione scritte da emigranti.
Come negli anni precedenti, tanti brognaturesi e le loro famiglie
sono venute da citta` come Hamilton, Sault St. Marie, London e
Kitchener.
Dopo
la messa c`e` stata la benedizione del pane e dei mustaccioli (dei
voti) e come e`
usanza, subito dopo vengono distribuiti. Nel
pomeriggio, tante donne che in precedenza avevano
preparato (a casa) dei dolci,
li hanno portati
sul tavolo dell`amicizia per essere consumati ed il club ha
sevito del
caffe`. C`e` stato l`intrattenimento ‘live’ (complesso
musicale) e sono
stati sorteggiati tanti premi
.
IL club
quest`anno ha offerto ‘panini con la porchetta’ e pannocchie
di
granturco bollito.
Nonostante
la temperatura non abbia collaborato, e` stata una buona giornata
per tutti, amici e parenti.
Quest`anno non posso
offrire le fotografie di tutte le attivita` che usiamo fare, ma
posso offrire soltanto le fotografie di tanti nostri e vostri
amici e figli di Brognaturo di cui la Madonna della Consolazione
ha un grande amore. Buon
